Vincent Van Gogh's Trees

Olive Trees by Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch artist who lived from 1853-1890. He was a Post-Impressionist painter. His style is characterized by bold, intense color and strong, confident brush strokes.

Olive Trees

Van Gogh often painted nature. Trees are a common subject in his paintings. Here are some examples of his painting of olive trees.

*What are some words you would use to describe the lines in Van Gogh's paintings? What words would you use to describe the trunks of the trees?

*What effect do Van Gogh's lines achieve in his paintings? What do his lines make it look like the trees and the sky are doing? Are they simply standing still, solid like a statue?

These are examples of Van Gogh's Mulberry Tree paintings. These were painted in autumn. Van Gogh sent several paintings to his brother in a package. The Mulberry tree was his personal favorite
of the bunch.
